As you are probably aware, many companies in the Oil, Manufacturing and Industrial sectors are changing their approach to employee safety through the implementation of Behavior Based Safety. Founded on scientific principles, and based on nearly twenty (20) years of field-tested application, Behavior Based Safety has proven highly effective at establishing the basis for continuous improvement in occupational safety.
For many organizations, previous attempts to improve safety performance have proven unsuccessful as a result of efforts focused on identifying the root-causes of accidents, after the incident occurs. The Behavioral Based Safety is the foundation for proactively managing safety by focusing on factors that contribute to accidents before an incident occurs.
In the behavioral process, employees are actively involved and empowered to identify, define and measure both Safe and At-Risk "behaviors" in the workplace. The definition of these behaviors are communicated to both labor and management so that it is clear to everyone involved what employees should do and how they should do it. Once employees have been educated in the process, they begin collecting "samples" and providing feedback on the identified behaviors. The results are compiled and used by the workgroup to identify improvement opportunities.
